In this blog post, Ewan McIntosh, a regular host of our GETinsight blog, takes inspiration from formative-assessment advocate Dylan William. Referencing a video clip featuring Williams, McIntosh seconds the recommendation to move from IRE questioning (Initiate, Response, Evaluate–one teacher, one child at a time–”ping-pong”) to “basketball” questioning: Pose a question, allow a child to answer, ask another child to evaluate the answer, and ask a third child for an explanation of how and why that’s right or wrong.
