KQED MindShift profiles the Katy Independent School District near Houston, Texas (U.S.), a K-12 district with 56 schools and 63,000 students speaking 83 languages–a district where 31% of the student population is on free or reduced-fee lunch programs. In 2009, Katy launched a three-year plan to change instruction in the district by promoting a standardized toolbox of Web-based tools and setting guidelines for digital citizenship. That plan has resulted in what appears to be a successful mobile-learning program that integrates BYOD (“bring your own device”) for students.
