How can educators motivate students to learn, keep them motivated throughout the learning process, and encourage teamwork and competition? As author Obert Muzurura explains in Game-based Learning in Primary Education, the answer can be the design, implementation, and consistent use of game-based learning (GBL) that immerses students with material that is critical for effective learning. As an example, Muzurura points to The Spelling Bee (TSB), an innovative educational framework designed as a GBL tool for helping students in understanding English-language spelling. TSB was implemented at Shashi View Primary School in Bindura, Zimbabwe. Pre- and post-tests were used as assessment tools to evaluate the potential of GBL, and a survey was also conducted to seek for acceptance of GBL. The results indicate that GBL has a significant impact on student performance if it is blended with conventional learning practices.
