Facilitation-focused Pedagogy
The Colegio Cardenal de Cracovia (nicknamed “Mundo Karol”) was founded in Santiago, Chile, by Juan Carlos Navarrete Alvarez in 1980 to serve young people ages 5-14 who had been excluded from other urban schools. The school’s ethos is based on the facilitation-focused pedagogy of Carl Rogers, as well as Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences. The school currently serves 800 students.
The Escuela-Estado (School-State)
Mundo Karol is organized as an independent republic, divided by age into smaller communities, with a president elected from within the student body, a cabinet, government departments, a police force, and its own currency. Mundo Karol regards its citizens (called “cracovianos”) as including all students, staff, and parents.
Project-based Learning
The school follows a project-based learning model. The “escuela-estado” serves as a central, organizing project around which everything else is built.Read More (Spanish)
