The U.S. Department of Education has awarded $650 million in a grant competition known as Investing in Innovation. Big winners–$50 million each–were Teach for America, a nonprofit group that recruits college students to teach in public schools, and the KIPP Foundation, which runs a nationwide network of charter schools. Others winning large awards were the Success for All Foundation and Ohio State University. Unlike the Race to the Top competition for state school systems, Investing in Innovation was open to nonprofit organizations and local school districts.Source: The New York Times
