U.K. Secretary of Education Michael Gove has announced 300 additional “inadequate” primary schools–that is, those given the lowest possible rating by the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services, and Skills (OFSTED)–will become independent academies run by third-party sponsors. This adds to the 220 schools already in the process of converting to academy status. Once the primary schools are converted, they are placed under the control of education chains, charities, and faith groups that may write their own curriculum, choose start times and duration of the school day and school year, and pay high-performing staff more money. Gove also plans to set up a £10-million fund to create more schools chain to run failing schools.
