U.S. President Barack Obama has announced a $1-billion plan to create an elite group of math and science teachers. The money will be spent on bonuses for teachers considered high-performing, with the goal of improving student achievement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Those who are selected for the Master Teacher Corps will receive a salary bonus if they commit to multiyear participation. Members of the Corps will assist and mentor less-experienced teachers to support improvements to the instructional quality for all U.S. students.
