India has developed a $35 touchscreen laptop/tablet designed to bridge the digital divide, support education goals, and boost India’s economy. Kapil Sibal, India’s human resource development minister, unveiled the prototype, stating that 110 million Indian school children will be the first recipients, with college students next on the list for 2011.
The device, developed by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science in Bengalooru, can be powered by traditional or solar sources. In time, the new tablet will be available to the general public.
