India’s National Knowledge Network, slated for completion in December 2011, is expected to be the world’s largest high-speed data communications network. A $1.33-billion government project, the network will connect more than 1,500 universities and research institutions in India to foster collaboration. The network aims to offer a variety of benefits to to the country’s higher-education system, including allowing undergraduates at lower-quality colleges to access lectures at top institutions, and enabling scientists to work together to address critical challenges, such as nationwide availability of food and healthcare.
