Prime Minister Julia Gillard plans to elevate the international standing of Australian schools, pledging to bring them into the top five education systems in the world by 2025. In the government’s response to the Gonski review of school funding, Gillard has announced a plan for an ‘Australian Education Act’ to enshrine a new funding model. This means that an incoming Coalition government would have to repeal the law if it wanted to return to the present–and its preferred–model.
