The completion of primary school for all children by 2015 is one of the eight Millennium Development Goals that were discussed at the 1GOAL Education for All summit convened in South Africa on the day of the FIFA World Cup 2010 finals. Now the heads of state of Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, the Gambia, Ghana, Lesotho, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Rwanda have written to government leaders in donor countries appealing for financial support to make Education for All (EFA) a lasting legacy of the World Cup for all children in Africa. The leaders asked specifically for support for the EFA Fast-Track (FTI) Initiative, which has provided support for education in 24 African countries and has helped enroll 19 million more children in school in these countries. Currently an estimated 14 million out-of-school children, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, live in countries seeking EFA FTI support to train teachers, construct classrooms, and obtain and distribute textbooks.
