• Eighty Percent of College Faculty Teach Using Social Media

  According to a new survey from the Babson Survey Research Group and Pearson, college faculty are twice as likely as other industry workers to be using social media as part of their job, and more than 80% of faculty are using some form of social media in their teaching. Of those, nearly two-thirds use social media within their class session, 40% require students to read or view social media as part of a course assignment, 30% post content for students to view outside of class, and 20% assign students to comment or post to social media sites.

• Twitter Increases Student Engagement

  According to a study based on the National Survey of Student Engagement, college students who were asked to contribute to class discussions and complete assignments using Twitter increased their engagement over a semester more than twice as much as a control group. In addition to showing more than twice the improvement in engagement than the control group, the students who used Twitter also achieved on average a .5 point increase in their overall GPA for the semester. The study will be published next week in the Journal of Computer Assisted Learning.

  On Monday, September 13, IT officials at the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (Pennsylvania, U.S.) will block access to popular social-media tools Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and AOL Instant Messenger for one week. They will also disable the wiki and chat features in Harrisburg’s Moodle-based learning management system. It’s part of an experiment designed by Provost Eric Darr, who wants to see how one lives with social media by examining how one lives without it.

  As part of a larger effort to build an International Internet Classroom, a faculty team at the University of Arizona (U.S.) is building a Facebook program designed to help middle and high school students learn how to teach themselves. The Teach Ourselves project will give Facebook users points for doing homework, showing others how to work through math equations, translating word problems into other languages, critiquing student papers, writing educational Web applications, and producing electronic flashcards or educational videos.

   Professor Johannes Cronje, a dean at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in South Africa, said during an e-learning workshop that technological resources abound that can be used to enhance teaching, but many teachers choose to make use of these resources. He said that rather than order students to put away their mobile phones, students should be told to switch on their phones in class.
