  1GOAL:Education for All this week launched the world’s biggest-ever mobile phone campaign in support of 72 million children still denied access to basic primary education. “1GOAL is about people-power, and with the mobile phone we have created the largest-ever, never-before-done cause-related campaign of its kind,” said Jordan’s Queen Rania according to a recent statement from 1GOAL.

  Witnesses testifying before the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee said that Congress should encourage, incentivize, and support the universal elements that research and best practices show are working to turn around the country’s lowest-performing schools. Research outlined by witnesses shows that successful school turnaround must include flexibility, shared leadership, professional development, capacity building, extended school and learning time, and community involvement.

  An increased focus on higher education in India is yielding dividends. According to the University Grants Commission, the 11th Five Year Plan’s ambitious aim to increase higher-ed enrollment to 15% could be achievable. The commission attributes the potential success to increased funding allocations from state governments–from  Rs 4,000 crore in the 10th Plan to Rs 48,000 crore in the 11th. Source: The Times of India

   While not quite the eye-popping technology of the movie Avatar, schools increasingly are offering lessons in the virtual world as an alternative to textbooks and PowerPoint presentations. Teachers and students say the use of avatars and virtual worlds in classes from health to economics pulls in even reluctant learners, as well as encourages problem-solving and higher-order thinking as classroom knowledge is applied to real-life situations.

  Saudi Arabia’s National Center for E-Learning and Distance Learning has launched its virtual classroom Jusour system for distance learning and connecting students with faculty members. The system enables voice and video communication, chatting facilities, file sharing, a virtual whiteboard, and a range of other interactive facilities.
